Company Snapshot

Founded on a market gap, not a recipe

Two Italians arrived in Paris in 2002 and couldn't find gelato worth eating. Amorino is privately held and files no public accounts — the U.S. Franchise Disclosure Document is the one reliably audited source of numbers, and it's what this page is built on.

The Design Decision

The rose is the marketing budget.

Shaping gelato into a rose, and letting customers combine up to four flavours in one cone, converts every purchase into free, shareable advertising. In a 2002 founding this was foresight; after 2010 it became the single largest growth lever in the business, and it costs almost nothing per impression.

The trade-off: it's slower than scooping. The in-store "Gelato Artist" is both the brand's signature and its throughput bottleneck during peak footfall.

Sourcing & Certification

Organic farm eggs, whole milk, and named-origin ingredients — Madagascar bourbon vanilla, Sicilian pistachio. No preservatives, no artificial flavours or colours, as a standing sourcing rule.

Vegan Society, sorbet · 2015/16 100% gluten-free · 2017 CNGF quality charter · 2016
Load-Bearing Risks

What could actually break this

Load-bearing

Founder concentration

Recipe R&D, sourcing, brand and strategy all still route through co-founders Cristiano Sereni and Paolo Benassi. No visible succession bench after 24 years.

Load-bearing

Unverified franchisee economics

Amorino hasn't published average unit volumes or franchisee profitability — impossible to confirm from outside whether unit economics work for franchisees, or only for the franchisor.

Load-bearing

Seasonality & footfall dependence

Gelato demand is steeply weather- and tourism-dependent. Hot chocolate, crêpes, waffles and brioche al gelato hedge this — they don't solve it.

Moderate

"Artisanal" vs. centralised production

The brand promise is handcrafted; the supply chain is one lab in Orly feeding 300+ stores. Finishing happens in-store — but it's the standing reputational exposure.

2006

Franchising begins

In France, layered on top of the centralised production base.

2015–16

Vegan Society certification

Across the entire sorbet range.

2017
